Job Summary

The Department of Natural Resources is seeking to fill one (1) full-time Laborer, Trades and Equipment position located at Jay Cooke State Park in Carlton, Minnesota. Scheduled hours could be between 7:00am-11:30pm, however, 8:00am-4:30pm is the anticipated typical regular shift, which may sometimes vary to include evening security shifts, assistance with special events, coverage for staff absences or other park needs and travel. Days of work are rotating and include weekend rotations, particularly in the off season.

This position exists to assist park management in directing and managing the operations of Parks and Trails facilities at Jay Cooke State Park and to perform the daily activities involved with facility development and maintenance on the park's 8,800 acres. This includes responsibility for providing an array of quality recreational experiences in all seasons, maintaining a wide variety of facilities including historic districts and buildings on the national register, and to provide an enjoyable and safe experience for all visitors.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Apply technical knowledge in the development and maintenance of sites and facilities, so that as a lead worker, safe and high-quality facilities are provided for public use. This includes a priority to perform or assign regular daily cleaning of park buildings.
  • Perform routine inspections and repairs on equipment so that it is in safe working condition. Operate or direct the use of heavy equipment to construct and service recreation facilities.
  • Represent Jay Cooke State Park and the DNR by providing information to the public so that user needs are met. This includes low-key enforcement of park rules and regulations as a Park Security Ranger.
  • Complete safety and other job-related training.
  • To assure responsibility for safety and accountability for safety performance so that employee will perform tasks according to established safety procedures to reduce injuries and equipment damage.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Position requires a Class A Driver's License (CDL), passing a pre-employment drug screen and participation in the DNR ongoing random drug screening program. Otherwise qualified applicants who do not have valid Class A will be allowed up to six (6) months to acquire one, as a condition of employment.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in trades work and construction.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain medium & heavy motorized equipment, e.g. dump trucks, snow plows, snow groomers, tractors with trailers, watercraft, grader, backhoe, front-end loader, auger, plus power and hand tools, including chain saws, air compressors, carpentry tools, and other equipment/tools as assigned.
  • Ability to service, perform minor repairs and make adjustments to machinery and equipment, including general maintenance and repair of buildings.
  • Ability to perform semi-skilled trades work sufficient to assist or perform carpentry, plumbing, electrical assignments, including installation and maintenance of equipment, plumbing, heating and electrical systems.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal directions sufficient to interpret, communicate and carry out verbal assignments, safely and efficiently.
  • Strength and agility sufficient to load, operate and repair equipment and materials.
  • Endurance sufficient to perform tasks under extreme environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain, snow, sun and wind.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to communicate to staff/visitors, etc.
  • Ability to solve problems, make decisions, work safely and effectively with others.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge and experience of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in trades work and construction.
  • Experience of field management techniques, including engineering skills needed to maintain trail and water recreation facilities.
  • Knowledge of equipment, machinery and materials needed to develop, operate and maintain trail and water recreation facilities.
  • Experience in equipment maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
  • Experience in the safe operation of tractors, trucks, trailers, mowers, chain saws and related equipment, or trails and water recreation site maintenance including winter groomed trails.
  • Considerable knowledge of the goals, objectives, policies and procedures for Parks & Trails programs.
  • Working knowledge of civil engineering, landscape architecture and planning process, as applicable to recreation facility design and construction.
  • Considerable knowledge of equipment needed to develop, operate and maintain trail and water recreation facilities.
  • Some knowledge of natural resource management fields such as forestry, wildlife management, hydrology, sufficient to know when a specialist should be involved.
  • Knowledge of organizations, groups and interests involved in Parks & Trails activities. Working knowledge of financial management procedures of Parks & Trails.
  • Technical school certificates, licensure or degrees in one or more of the following: carpentry, construction, electrical repair, plumbing, masonry, small engine repair/automotive, or HVAC.
  • First aid/CPR certification.
  • Experience providing lead work direction/assigning tasks/ensuring completion.
  • Defensive Driving training.
  • Current Advanced Chainsaw (B Faller) Certification.
Additional Requirements

This position requires current possession of a valid Class A license or the ability to obtain one in the first 6 months of employment. The selected applicant will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen and will be included in the ongoing DNR random drug and alcohol test program.
