Nature of Work

The Machinist/Fabricator is responsible for maintaining the reliable and functional working condition of the water plant's rotating equipment (pumps, mixers, gear boxes, motors, etc.). Work performed is under the general direction of the Water Treatment Plant Manager or Water Plant Superintendent.

Essential Functions of Work

  • Performs rotating equipment maintenance tasks to restore and maintain equipment functionality.
  • Ensures site and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) maintenance practices and procedures are being followed and develops and updates Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for same.
  • Rebuilds and repairs pumps and rotating equipment, including precision alignment, pump overhaul, mechanical seal installation, packing installation, packing adjustment, and lubrication.
  • Replaces wear components of rotating equipment, such as bearings, seals, and packing.
  • Conducts or oversees vibration analysis tasks for major plant equipment.
  • Conducts daily plant and system inspections and performs equipment maintenance. Will ensure that maintenance spares are inventoried, and supplies are available prior to work start.
  • Works with electrical, and plumbing personnel including utility/relief operators while performing maintenance.
  • Submits work requests to the Water Plant Superintendent for plumbing, electrical and maintenance issues.
  • Operates and maintains a computerized maintenance program that tracks preventive maintenance and work orders for maintenance personnel.
  • Maintains inventory for repairs to include ordering, handing and transporting equipment and parts for maintenance.
  • Develops and maintains a strong and effective working relationship with the Water Plant Superintendent, Water Treatment Plant Manager and other plant personnel.
  • Maintains safe working environment and post task housekeeping.
  • Completes tasks in a professional & efficient manner.
  • Maintains assigned tools and plant equipment in proper operational condition.
  • All other duties as assigned
Education and Experience

  • Must have demonstrated experience with water treatment equipment, or similar pumps, synchronous motors, mixers, gear boxes, seals, valves, valve actuators, and a proficient understanding of electrical, plumbing, and mechanical practices.
  • Minimum of five years' of experience in water treatment plant maintenance or industrial maintenance.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Candidate must possess or have the ability to obtain valid Montana driver's license

  • Substantial knowledge of the current principles and practices of water treatment equipment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of laws and regulations regarding water quality.
  • Substantial knowledge of laws and regulations regarding safe work practices.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and maintain PPE, plant tools, and equipment in top/proper/sound operational condition.
  • Ability to maintain legible, accurate written records and develop reports.
  • Ability to update SOPs, drawings, and records as needed.
  • Ability to plan, assign and direct the work of other employees or contractors as required.
  • Ability to utilize and operate required computer technology and systems.
  • Ability to respond after hours to perform assigned work duties in the event of emergency or weather related response

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position does not supervise other employees; however, will assign and direct the work of other employees or contractors as required and may be required to oversee major work activity for rotating equipment in the event of an outage, site expansion, or major equipment repair.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, large pieces of equipment and vibrations and occasionally exposed to a variety of conditions involving these items. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. Employees are issued PPE and are required to follow SOP guidelines to prevent exposure to hazards.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, crawl, bend, twist, kneel, reach, grasp, push, pull, ride, climb elevated storage tanks for inspections utilizing safety harness and perform similar body movements. The employee must have the ability to perform heavy physical work and to frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds at a time and occasionally participate in two-person lifts over 50 pounds; possess hand/eye coordination sufficient to operate water plant equipment, hand tools, and a motor vehicle; have the ability to talkand hear in person or by telephone or two-way radio; and have the ability to see and read dials, instructions and reports.

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

The work week is Sunday through Saturday. The 40-hour work schedule consists of Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. The employee mustbe available to respond to weekend and emergency calls. This position is non-exempt and eligible for overtime. Any scheduled overtime must be authorized prior to working.

TRAVEL

Travel is primarily local during the business day. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
