Description Summary

This position is located within an organizational unit of the National Park Service. The incumbent will perform a variety of journey-level electrical work needed to install, modify, repair, maintain, troubleshoot, test, and/or load new and existing lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls and equipment.

Duties

The major duties of the Electrician position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Install, modify, repair, maintain, troubleshoot, test, and/or load new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment in accordance with CFR 19910.331-5 and the National Electric Code (NEC).
  • Install and troubleshoot meters, load centers, circuit breakers, equipment controls, lighting, power outlets, disconnects, solenoids, relays, and lighting fixtures. Accurately cut, thread, and install electrical conduit.
  • Work from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering, drawings, electrical maintenance and
repair manuals, and related codes.
  • Perform general maintenance and repair duties such as plumbing, painting, and custodial work as needed.
  • Perform some administrative tasks such as serve as project lead, performs data entry in automated computer software, assisting with budget management.
  • Operate motor vehicles and fork-lifts.

  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or
  • (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
  • Must complete OSHA 1910.269 High Voltage Electrical Safety, Confined Space Training and Lockout/Tagout Training within 6 months of hiring.
  • Must maintain a forklift operator's certification from the park and a valid non-CDL state or District of Columbia Driver's License.
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
  • Work demonstrating the ability to perform the duties of this position without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT)
  • Knowledge of Electrical Equipment.
  • Theory and Instruments (Electrical, Electronic) Used in Shop and Trade Practices
  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  • Ability To Use Electrical Drawings.
  • Trouble Shooting (Electrical).
  • Ability to use and maintain use and maintain hand tools (electrical work).
It is required for the incumbent to possess and maintain their Journeyman Electrician License.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Physical Demands: The physical effort for electricians includes making repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms and other hard to reach places. The work requires standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The work often requires lifting and carrying tools and equipment in excess of 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: The work is performed inside and outside, including temperature extremes and inclement weather conditions. Work maybe performed at heights of more than 30 feet. The incumbent may be exposed to the possibility of injury from falls, electrical shock, bums, and the use of power tools. The work sometimes requires backcountry hikes, travel on unimproved roads, or travel by helicopter.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are NOT suitable for telework.
