Job Title: Fire Equipment Operator
Location: Draper City, Utah

Job Description:
The State of Utah Wildfire Operations Center seeks motivated and experienced professionals to fill two benefited, career-level Fire Equipment Operator positions. This role involves operating and maintaining fire /fuel reduction equipment for hazardous fuel reduction projects, state lands restoration, and wildfire suppression/repair assignments. In addition to functional equipment operation, the incumbent will manage equipment inventory, and handle various administrative responsibilities. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to wildfire suppression and mitigation & help restore Utah's sovereign land to it's natural state while also helping develop a growing program.

Responsibilities

  • Fire readiness, fuels mitigation, and forest resiliency.
  • Operate dozers, excavators, skid steers, and other heavy equipment, including transports, for fire suppression and non-emergency fuel mitigation work.
  • Perform maintenance on heavy equipment, engines, chainsaws, and pumps.
  • Assist in training internal firefighters and external equipment operators.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Possession of a Class A CDL.
  • Wildfire Support: Assist in wildfire suppression by constructing firelines, clearing vegetation, and supporting fire crews during active incidents and post-incident repair efforts.
  • Project Implementation: Plan, coordinate, and execute fuel mitigation, state lands restoration, and wildfire projects, ensuring efficient use of equipment and adherence to timelines.
  • Supervise Personnel: Oversee subordinate staff, including hiring, workload delegation, training, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Administrative Duties: Manage purchasing actions, time and attendance reports, record-keeping, and correspondence.
  • Equipment Oversight: Conduct inspections, maintenance, and inventory of assigned equipment, recommending modifications or replacements when necessary.
  • Safety & Training: Lead safety briefings, after-action reviews (AARs), and physical training for subordinates.
  • Operational Coordination: Communicate fire and project details with superiors, subordinates, dispatch, interagency partners, and officials.
  • Incident Response: Ensure safety and well-being of assigned resources during wildland fire and fuel mitigation operations.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Required at Hire or Obtainable Within a Specified Timeframe):
  • Qualified Single Resource Boss or ability to obtain certification within a set timeframe.
  • Class A CDL or the ability to obtain one within a specified timeframe.
  • Ability to pass the Moderate Work Capacity Test.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience operating and maintaining various types of heavy equipment.
  • Wildland Fire Experience: Single Resource qualification with experience in fire operations, particularly using heavy equipment for firebreaks and fuel reduction.
  • Safety-First Mentality: Strong commitment to safety regulations and best practices.
  • Environmental Awareness: Understanding of how to minimize environmental impact during fuel mitigation.
  • Herbicide Application Knowledge: Familiarity with herbicide application methods and labels.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Heavy Equipment Boss (HEQB) Qualification.
  • Experience with fireline construction and repair.
  • Background in land and vegetation management.
  • Exposure to and experience with a wide range of heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
Supplemental Information

Special Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
  • Must be available for long shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must work in extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Must operate equipment for extended periods in rugged or uneven terrain.
  • Must perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and climbing in and out of equipment.
  • Must maintain situational awareness in hazardous work environments.
  • May be required to camp or stay overnight in remote locations during projects.
Certifications/Licenses Required at Hire or Obtainable During Probationary Period:
  • First Aid/CPR Certification.
  • Driver's License
  • Ability to obtain a Red Card at the Moderate fitness level (training provided post-hire).
  • Pesticide Applicator License.
Additional Information:
  • Must comply with on-call policies and remain available for response.
  • Must be willing to travel statewide, including overnight stays and remote fieldwork.
