Job Description

Performs minor repairs and maintenance to plumbing, carpentry, electrical, heating, and air conditioning systems in accordance with accepted practices and procedures; performs routine maintenance and janitorial duties; ensures work is in compliance with safety requirements. Assists with other maintenance environmental duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Checks, repairs, and installs air-conditioning, refrigerators, and cooling equipment including window units and domestic/ commercial central units.
  • Checks, repairs, and installs electrical and gas water heaters, and gas boilers used in hot water central heating systems; utilizes electrical equipment and hand tools.
  • Repairs and installs plumbing equipment; repairs water lines; unclogs drainage lines.
  • Changes burned out lights and performs minor electrical repair and maintenance; repairs and replaces electrical motors; installs new wiring, conduit pipes, breaker panels, transformers, and control wiring.
  • Decides on the amount of materials needed to perform repair and maintenance work on new projects.
  • Performs minor carpentry repairs; installs doors, and replaces door and window frames, etc.
  • Performs routine maintenance and janitorial duties including cleaning, sweeping, mopping, waxing, and replenishing supplies.
  • Assists Electrician in installing panel breakers, conduit lines, troubleshooting lighting, and outlets.
  • Performs other related work as required.

  • Knowledge of the methods and materials used in commercial building cleaning and minor repair.
  • Knowledge of the construction trades such as electrical, plumbing, and carpentry.
  • Knowledge of the methods and materials used in maintaining and repairing light and heavy duty cooling and heating systems and related components.

  • Ability to determine supplies and materials needed before beginning a maintenance or repair project.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Experience

  • At least one (1) year of general experience. Experience performing plumbing, painting, electrical, heating and air conditioning repair, and/or maintenance work is preferred.
Proof of TB Test/Screening will be required to be presented prior to employment.
Valid Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.

Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.
