Heavy Equipment Operator - Rail Track Construction/Ameritrack Rail-Kansas
Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating various heavy machinery to support rail track construction projects. This includes equipment such as loaders, backhoes, excavators, and bulldozers. The role also involves equipment maintenance, adherence to safety standards, and occasional track laborer duties as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operate loaders, backhoes, excavators, bulldozers, and other heavy equipment to load, haul, and unload materials, equipment, and supplies.
Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance of assigned equipment, report defects or required repairs to the supervisor, and ensure equipment is clean.
Perform all tasks in compliance with company safety standards and procedures.
Assist with track laborer responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications

A. Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED (preferred).
2-4 years of experience operating heavy equipment.
Prior experience with rail construction equipment is a plus.
B. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Proficiency in operating heavy equipment such as backhoes and front-end loaders.
Willingness to travel to job sites for extended periods.
Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
Exceptional communication skills, including verbal, non-verbal, and written communication, with an emphasis on active listening.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Capable of multitasking in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
Familiarity with laser/machine controls and blueprint reading is an advantage.
C. Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, correspondence, and memos.
Capable of writing basic correspondence and presenting information in one-on-one and small group settings.
D. Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in various units of measurement using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
E. Reasoning Ability
Apply common sense understanding to execute detailed but straightforward written or verbal instructions.
Address and resolve typical challenges encountered in rail track construction.
F. Certifications and Licenses
Certification required for operating on tracks controlled by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
Possession of a CDL is a plus.

Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts.
Occasional work in high, precarious places; exposure to fumes, airborne particles, or caustic chemicals.
Work may be required during nights, holidays, and weekends.
Moderate noise levels typical of construction environments.

Starting hourly rate: $17.98/hr.
