Description The City of Overland Park has a part-time Laborer I position available at the Arboretum Botanical Gardens.

Summary:

Maintains arboretum appearance by systematically patrolling and cleaning trails and grounds. Maintains and repairs facilities. Mows grass, trims trees along trails, and maintains gardens. Assists with customer service. Makes additional improvements as needed to comply with City codes and new ADA standards. Assists with emergency operations, including snow removal, as required.

Responsibilities:

  • Patrols and cleans buildings, trails and grounds. Assists with the set up, operation and tear down of events, exhibits and rentals.
  • Mows turf areas. Uses riding mowers, push mowers, and string trimmers to mow turf areas, trails, and accessory areas. Uses blowers on sidewalks and other paved areas.
  • Uses proper horticultural and arboricultural techniques to plant, prune, fertilize, rototill and add soil amendments to annuals, perennials, bulbs, shrubs and trees. Assists in maintaining and repairing irrigation system. Waters as needed.
  • Maintains and repairs facilities. Uses appropriate tools for the task to repair or improve vandalized, weathered, or otherwise damaged structures.
  • Maintains trails. Mulches trails and keeps branches trimmed off trails. Assists in maintaining prairie by planting food crops, controlling weeds and controlled burns.
  • Follows proper procedures and guidelines to bring Arboretum in compliance with ADA Standards, i.e., parking, trails, facilities.
  • Maintains equipment and tools in proper working order. Inspects, repairs, lubricates and cleans per equipment manuals. Follows proper storage maintenance and use techniques according to City policies and appropriate equipment manuals.
  • Assists with construction of additional facilities such as signs, small buildings, fences, etc.
  • Assists with customer service and provides general information to public by answering questions, providing directions, enforcing rules.
  • Assists in ensuring a safe environment for visitors and general public. Identifies safety hazards and informs supervisor of hazards. Takes corrective action.
  • Assists with emergency operations, including snow removal, as required.
  • The employee must work the days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks. Must be available (especially during regular business hours or shifts) to communicate with subordinates, supervisors, customers, vendors and any other persons or organization with whom interaction is required to accomplish work and employer goals.
  • The employee must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance, including, but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines; beginning and ending assignments on time; and scheduled work breaks, where applicable.
Requirements:

  • Basic education (general high school of three grades) or additional equivalent experience.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • Must maintain an insurable driving record.
  • Six months experience in landscape/horticulture, operation of mowing equipment, hand and power tools, and motorized utility vehicles, or an equivalent level of experience.

  • Ability to travel and tour City facilities and parks in adverse conditions.

  • Exposure to chemical liquids, powders and fumes.
  • Ability to operate City vehicles and equipment.
  • Exposure to vehicle fumes and noise.
  • Exposure to extreme environmental conditions.

Normal Work Hours: Variable Hours - PT/SEA/TMP

Pay Rate: $15.25 per hour
