As our Construction and Maintenance Hatchery Utilities Maintenance Mechanic, you will provide skilled experience in the operation of heavy equipment, while expanding your knowledge of hatchery construction, operation, and production processes.
This is an opportunity to support a team of construction professionals who specialize in the construction, installation, and maintenance of critical hatchery production components that help sustain Washington's fish populations and enhance recreational and commercial fishing opportunities.
What to Expect-
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Construction and Maintenance Hatchery Utilities Maintenance Mechanicwill,
Perform Plumbing Tasks:
Install, maintain, and repair valves, control gates and various types of supply and drain pipe - such as PVC, HDPE, steel, and ductile iron.
Install water towers, formalin systems, fish rearing ponds and domestic water systems.
Perform inspections of water mains, fixtures, and valves to determine need for maintenance and repair.
Operate Heavy Equipment:
Safely operate construction and earth moving equipment such as, but not limited to: Excavators of various sizes; Wheel loaders more than 80 net flywheel horsepower; Rubber tired loader/backhoe combination 51 net flywheel horsepower or more; AWD Telehandler (off-road forklift).
Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, sketches, and specifications.
Operate electronic grade control systems to determine, correct, or maintain grade/elevations.
Drive Trucks:
Operate trucks and trailers of all types and sizes to transport materials, equipment.
Operate vehicles rated at 80,000 Gross Combined Weight (GCW) or more, including semi-tractor/trailer equipment.
Direct or participate in loading and unloading equipment, material, or supplies.
Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspection of vehicles and trailers to ensure safe operational order and report maintenance or repair issues.
Assist in Welding and Fabrication:
Assist in the welding and fabrication repairs to various metal structures.
Working Conditions:

:
Duties are performed at construction sites in the Hatcheries and Wildlife areas and on occasion in an office setting.
Hazards include working on rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, and other surfaces, confined and difficult to reach spaces, and in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, or snow.
Bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, and lifting 50 pounds repetitively periodically throughout the workday and when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project site.
Operate motor vehicles in hazardous weather conditions such as snow and ice while on mountain passes, highways, and roads (both paved and unpaved).
Schedule:
Typically, 6:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Thursday, and work additional hours as needed/requested. This may include overnight stays and evening and weekend work.
Travel Requirements:
Travel required 70-90% depending on the season.
Tools and Equipment:
Basic hand tools, power tools such as drills, roto hammers, cut off saws, circular saws, metal band saws, welders, cutting torch, chainsaws, concrete cut-off (hot saw) and/or powered motors, automotive equipment, and trailers.
Customer Interactions:
Frequent interactions varying between Federal, Local, Inter-Agency, and Intra-Agency customers and vendors.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Four (4) years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work
OR
completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade.
AND
all of the following:
(Please note, experience may be gained concurrently).
Three (3) years of experience operating heavy equipment, such as excavators, dozers, and backhoes.
Three (3) years of experience with underground utilities infrastructure installation/repair.
Experience operating heavy construction equipment in a safe and skillful manner.
Experience adjusting and making repairs to equipment.
Experience in the installation and repair of industrial plumbing components.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches and verbal instruction and order parts, materials, and equipment.
Knowledge of:
Rules of safe operation of equipment.
Motor vehicle laws.
Methods, tools, and materials used in servicing and maintaining heavy equipment.
Certifications/Licenses:
A valid driver's license recognized by the state of Washington and acceptable driving record.
Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) endorsement with current Medical Examiner's Certificate.
Preferred Qualifications:

Insurance Benefits
Employees and their families are covered by medical (including vision), dental and basic life insurance. There are multiple medical plans with affordable monthly premiums that offer coverage throughout the state.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs. For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP). This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
Social Security
All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.
Public Service Loan Forgiveness
If you are employed by a government or not-for-profit organization, and meet the qualifying criteria, you may be eligible to receive student loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
Holidays
Full-time and part-time employees are entitled to paid holidays and one paid personal holiday per calendar year.
Note:
Employees who are members of certain Unions may be entitled to additional personal leave day(s), please refer to position specific Collective Bargaining Agreements for more information.
Full-time employees who work full monthly schedules qualify for holiday compensation if they are employed before the holiday and are in pay status for at least 80 nonovertime hours during the month of the holiday; or for the entire work shift preceding the holiday.
Part-time employees who are in pay status during the month of the holiday qualify for the holiday on a pro-rata basis. Compensation for holidays (including personal holiday) will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status in the month to that required for full-time employment, excluding all holiday hours. Pay status includes hours worked and time on paid leave.
Sick Leave
Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Overtime eligible employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month, earn a monthly proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Overtime exempt employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month do not earn a monthly accrual of sick leave.
Sick leave accruals for part-time employees will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.
Vacation (Annual Leave)
Full-time employees accrue vacation leave at the rates specified in (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Full-time employees who are in pay status for less than 80 nonovertime hours in a month do not earn a monthly accrual of vacation leave.
Part-time employees accrue vacation leave hours in accordance with (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on a pro rata basis. Vacation leave accrual will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment.
Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.
As provided in , an employer may authorize a lump-sum accrual of vacation leave or accelerate the vacation leave accrual rate to support the recruitment and/or retention of a candidate or employee for a Washington Management Service position. Vacation leave accrual rates may only be accelerated using the rates established WAC 357-31-165.
Note:
Most agencies follow the civil service rules covering leave and holidays for
exempt
employees even though there is no requirement for them to do so. However, agencies are required to adhere to the applicable RCWs pertaining holidays and leave.
Military Leave
Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year.
Bereavement Leave
Most employees whose family member or household member dies, are entitled to three (3) days of paid bereavement leave. In addition, the employer may approve other available leave types for the purpose of bereavement leave.
